Robotics Teams

What is Sci-Quest Robotics Teams?

The mission of the Sci-Quest Robotics Teams is to give children access to robotics programming in order to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills. Sci-Quest is working to achieve these goals by providing children Summer Camp and Competition Team opportunities.

What is First Lego League?

FLL uses challenges based on real world scientific problems to engage children in research, problem solving, and engineering. The cornerstone of the program is its Core Values, which emphasize friendly sportsmanship, learning, and community involvement.

Each yearly challenge has two parts, the Project and the Robot Game. Working in teams of three to ten children and guided by at least one adult coach, teams have 8 weeks to:

  • Build an autonomous robot to carry out pre-designed missions in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Analyze, research, and invent a solution to a real world problem.

What is Jr. First Lego League?

Jr. FLL introduces the youngest students to the exciting worlds of science and technology. Just like FLL, this program features a real-world challenge, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to create solutions and present them for review.

Younger elementary school students get to:

  • Design and build challenge solutions using LEGO elements.
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts.
  • Research challenges facing today's scientists.
  • Learn team-building and presentation skills.
  • Develop Show-Me posters.

What is First Tech Challenge?

FTC is designed for those who want to compete head-to-head, using a sports model. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.

Students get to:

  • Design, build, and program robots.
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts.
  • Develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills.
  • Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments.
  • Earn a place in the World Championship.
  • Qualify for nearly $9.7 million in college scholarships.

Who can be on a team?

The following ages are offered in robotics competition teams:

  • Ages 6-8 Jr. First Lego League (Jr. FLL)
  • Ages 9-14 First Lego League (FLL)
  • Ages 14-18 First Tech Challenge (FTC)

Sci-Quest also has an extra requirement that your child not have ACCESS to a robotics team. This means that your child's school or organization does not currently offer robotics teams.
