2010 Expanding Your Horizons Conference
Tuesday, April 27 – Friday, April 30 2010

Expanding Your Horizons is a conference that nurtures girls' interest in science and math courses to encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Expanding Your Horizons’ mission is to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Through Expanding Your Horizons, we provide STEM role models and hands-on activities for middle school girls. Expanding Your Horizons’ ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges.

Workshop topics for 2010 Expanding Your Horizons Conference:

  • Building Your Future - Structural Engineering Challenge
Put on your construction caps! Together with your team, design and build your own straw tower masterpiece. Structures will be put to the test. Can yours withstand the most weight, wind, and even an earthquake? Get design pointers from a real structural engineer and find out about opportunities in engineering.
  • To Infinity and Beyond - Aerospace Engineering Challenge
Explore the challenges in space. Space exploration creates many obstacles; from proper nutrition to hydration and coping with the lack of gravity, getting there seems to be the least of our worries. Try your hands at a solution for providing clean drinking water for astronauts. Meet a female scientist who worked on a project that is now in use on the International Space Station.
  • Gettin’ Cheeky with DNA
Get up close and personal with DNA – yours! Extract your own DNA from cells inside your cheeks. Take your DNA home in a DNA necklace that is truly one of a kind! Learn about the future of genetics and career opportunities from a local biotechnologist.
  • Medical Mystery
Solve the mystery of the switched babies. Using synthetic blood samples, test blood samples to determine their ABO classification. Using your results and genetic information, uncover if the babies were switched at birth. Discover careers in the medical field and meet a health care professional.
  • Movers and Shakers
Make a robotic bug that will shake and shimmy all by itself! Using simple electrical components discover how circuits and electricity work. Learn about some real life uses of robots and careers in robotics.
