About Sci-Quest

Sci-Quest's History

Sci-Quest's grassroots beginnings set the stage for many exciting developments in a relatively short period of time.

1989-1998: Regional volunteers concerned about science education and careers founded NASC in 1989. During the ensuing ten years, NASC conducted a capital campaign and renovated 42,000 sq. feet of former manufacturing space donated by Calhoun Community College while concurrently developing and implementing educational programs and procedures and an Educator Resource Center funded by grants from NASA, the Amoco Foundation, and the Alabama Space Grant Consortium. Business procedures were also developed and refined. During this development phase, an Interim Center housing volunteer-made exhibits served visitors and acted as a training laboratory for staff and volunteers. In 1998, NASC moved from loaned Calhoun space to the new facility named Sci-Quest.

1999-2003: Grants from NASA and the Appalachian Regional Commission enabled Sci-Quest to acquire over 120 interactive exhibits supporting basic science principles as outlined by the Alabama Course of Study in Science and to develop an Early Childhood Area offering developmentally-appropriate hands-on, investigative exhibits especially for 4-8 year old children. Support from the Huntsville City School System and the Madison County School System provided two teachers on loan to assist in education program development and delivery. A Jane K. Lowe Charitable Fund grant built two vital classrooms while a TVA grant provided a solar array and exhibit. In March 2003, the Immersive Theater opened. This interactive, 3D computer laboratory provides stadium seating for 56 students and allows pairs to conduct simulation experiments on touchscreen computers.
